"BROTHERS AND SISTERS", beside having one of my favorite female leads, Sally Field, also has diversity. Oppositional positions held within a very close, involved family that include straight and gay love interests; faithful and unfaithful spouses, and lovers; adult conflicts between parent and adult children; jealousy and support between family members; different addictions face some family members; and a difference in extreme political perspectives, are only a few of the issues and themes of the show. The family is like a small village, where everyone knows or learns what is happening to everyone else. When I saw 2 of the 1st 5 shows, I found so much variety overwhelming and the family unbelievable, and I wondered what other character type will appear next. Then I began to watch regularly and began to really like the family members. It is obviously produced for television audiences. It is not the quality of "DEADWOOD", but it was a nice escape, and the female actresses - mother and 2 daughters, were very believeable. Sally Field's brother also was part of the family and the family business, and he was believable. I decided to buy season one because I missed a few of the first 5 or 6 episodes. I also got it at a very good price on ebay.Read full review
I did not watch this series when it was on television, came across it on sale as a complete season so what the heck. I come from a very totally disfunctional family and this show can not compare. It shows how much each family lives for telling secrets about eachother. I can not believe that mother would be so completly involved with each members lives. It was easy to follow and very entertaining. You certainly get your moneys worth watching. I watched the making trailers and found them very worth watching, it explained about the food they ate and how much effort went into set with every detail. I enjoyed so much that I am now into season 3.
I was pleasntly surprised to find this and was very happy with the value, when I broke it down to "cost per episode". Besides that, this is just really good quality TV that is becoming harder to find. The drama situations are real and relevant to today's world. Sally Field is simply one of the better female actors of her generation and she doesn't overpower her part. The video is a good quality transfer to the DVD format. Great extras too, with a missing episode and analysis of "the family tree" of the show, that involves taking a look at the writing and other aspects of the show. As an aside, I like the packaging on this product, as it fits all 6 discs, into a normal size DVD case. It doesn't take up too much space and the discs are easy to get out and put back in. Overall a good setRead full review
A warm story with a "this is us" vibe. the "Brothers and Sisters" are close knit group who bicker and argue but love each other. The Walkers are not the Waltons but the conflicts are a good representation of a more realistic dynamic.

When the show first aired in a difficult time slot, it was billed as Calista Flockart's show. This series about the complex relationships between the Walker family trying to run the family business after the death of the patriarch is held together by 2 time Oscar Winner, Sally Field. And it's good to see her working steady again. It is now more Ms. Field's show and she won the Emmy to prove it this year. The storylines are filled with subplots and fine acting by a relatively unknown cast. Thanks to good scripts, direction and of course Ms. Field, this prime time series is well worth the watch on DVD. The transfer is clean and contains the entire first season. Field who started in TV was typecast from her "Gidget" and "Flying Nun" series and it took her many years to prove what a consummate actress she really was. In the Made For TV "Sybil" she played a woman with 16 personalities that won her an Emmy and led to 2 Oscars. Due to the Industry's age discrimination, she has been seen less and less in movies and on TV. She had a recurring role as the schizophrenic Maggie on ER that garnered her another Emmy and inbetween when good work wasn't available she turned her talents to directing--a TV holiday movie and the well-received theatrical release "Beautiful". Up until this series she was only seen briefly in a summer replacement "The Law" and on TV commercials. It's a shame Hollywood neglects the professionals due to their age (particularly women). Field is 60 years old and looks much younger. Welcome back Sally!Read full review
