The quad 405 amplifier's biggest strengths are its musicality and smoothness. I have owned a few dozens amplifiers, both tube (push pull, single ended) and solid state amplifiers. The 405 sound, although it is transistor based is similar to the Mosfet based B&K ST-140 for midrange. Bass reproduction is solid, tight and in my view on par with the vintage Ampzilla and for sure better than the B&K down lows. Treble is grain free and extended. The quad 405 main weaknesses are a lack of transparency and sound stage depth relative to better and costlier amplifiers. Music edge transients are slightly too rounded not sharp when required. The 405 sounds a bit dull in a critical listening session. But for background music, when you are busy doing something else around the home, it excels thanks to its musicality. At the used market price, the quad 405 is a very good value and a viable alternative to B&K ST140/ST202 for example. My quad 405 has several modifications. The power supply is dual mono, the output transistors are updated as well as the input chip, 5 way speaker binding posts and new input jacks. I listen to the Quad 405 through my Clements speakers, a 2 way speakers with a 7-inch ribbon and a transmission line for the bass.Read full review
