I still own Baitrunner 4500. Original, not even "B" modification, and it is still my workhorse. 20 years! That is when I was need to buy a new reel, I was very skeptical/cautious going from model to model... But this new "D" already made it's reputation, I did not worry much... And guess what? I was right! This reel has incredibly good from day 1. Casting: above my expectations. Line winding: much better than any big reel I ever had. Drags are good (meet high expectations). Weight is OK. Ongoing test - durability. My son's 4000D is still good after ~10 years, so my expectations are high!

I have used Shimono since I was in high school and always considered it to be the gold standard at it's price point. An I was always willing to pay $100 or so more for what I felt was a superior r eel until now. To my susprise I had also ordered a Peen live feeder in a comporable size which was 75.00 less than the Shimono. After a days worth of casting and reeling, I came to the comclusion that they were tied in performance for my taste. (Now I'm sure some will dispute my findings) But I could not justify the cost increase without the performance increase. So I sent two Shimonos back and purchased two Penn's.

Shimano Baitrunner D 4000 and up,are excellent reels,I have brought in huge 42 inch red fish with this reel,4 ft. sharks huge black drums etc... And it has lasted for years and comtinues to function like new.Even Shimanos low end $39.00 reels are saltwater approved and I still have 2 I started out with 14 yrs. ago still working...You dont need an expensive Saragosa I owned one and returned it due to wobble effect they have..Spheros on down to Baitrunner D are affordable and work just as good as high end other makers, even the Socorro is a great reel. The baitfeeder function is great,,,,Cant go wrong with Shimano
