Currently have Mac Pro 2, 1 with El Capitan loaded ("hacked" boot-loader to accept 64 bit EFI, can't go any further with this machine, CPU/firmware limitations) - due to Sierra and High Sierra OS being the most current (don't know when El Capitan support will end - anyway, can't update to the latest El Capitan release, "breaks" the machine so probably at the end of it's lifespan), had to update - got this 4 1 (updated firmware to a 5 1 unit - has the latest High Sierra OS version installed) so will have another 4 or 5 years (too bad M$ has an up to date OS which supports HW over 20 years old!, and is still speedy - who knew?), still need to "bootcamp" windows 7 (using VB 6 for a key software package - might have to update using the various Visual Studio suites, oh well, guess will have to learn a new programming language, no big deal).Read full review

I got screwed on a deal with Craigslist. Said it was a 2009 model It turned out to be a 2006, bad deal (They all look the same on the outside, and I took his word). Anyway after bitter resentment, i turned to ebay and found this 2009 Mac Pro. Three hard drives, very good shape and they shipped it for free. The price was good so it made me feel better about the loss from Craigslist. Ready to go from a quad processor to a 6 core.

Having the original Mac Pro 1,1 with a maxed out CPU I was happy. I was planning on riding that computer out until it just wouldn't start anymore, and I'm positive that would have been 2020. But, silly apple making a money play made it so I couldn't use 10.10 OS. So, I was upset but didn't matter (later I found out I could have updated it) but I researched all the newer Mac Pro's. The 2009 4,1 is the best value possible. As the 09,10,12 can all run on the same updated CPU. But considering they all run on the same CPU it doesn't make sense to pay $1000 more to get a computer that does fairly the same performance. When I first got the machine I was utterly shocked at how poorly is performed against my maxed out 06 Mac Pro. I finally got the CPU upgrade which is the w3680 and upon install was happy. Without that install this computer is slower than my last, with the new CPU is's almost twice as fast. The way I have it configured it's currently getting speeds well above the newest Mac Pro the 2014 trash can looking one.Read full review
Got a clean less expensive 4,1. Flashed to 5,1 with the new refi rom I installed a hex core and faster ram. Now a 5,1 hex core...superfast.
