If you like Neil Simon's brand of humor and a movie just full of stars, this is it. It is also reminiscent of one of our all time favorites-Murder By Death (with MANY of the same stars) so it was a natural for us to watch. We have no idea why we'd never seen or even heard of this movie before but we're glad we finally did.

Can't believe what a cast and horrible script by Neil SImon who in an interview can't admit how terribly written it was. Phil Silvers was in a 10 second shot at the end. Great cast but horrible story. Peter Falk does a great Bogart, Houseman a lousy Greenstreet. Just a waste of a great cast. Just pass this one by.

The Cheap Detective, based on the play by Neil Simon, was produced in 1978. This is a parady on Hollywood and a couple of great detective movies, "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon." Peter Falk plays detective Lou Peckingpaugh, who suspeciously acts like the great Humphrey Bogart in the movies mentioned. He gets into and out of trouble at the drop of a hat, and it often involves one of the many stars that play supporting roles in this comedy. And there are MANY stars; Madeline Kahn, John Houseman, Ann-Margret, Dom DeLuise, Louise Fletcher, Fernando Lamas, Eileen Brennan, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, Nicole Williamson, James Coco, Scatman Crothers, Abe Vigoda, Paul Williams and Stockard Channing. This is a must to get if not just for all these great actors in just one film. You really would do yourself an injustice if you see this movie without first seeing at least "Casablanca" first. But that said, you still would enjoy it for the play no words and the very good performance by the not too serious Peter Falk. A very enjoyable commedy for most in the family.Read full review
Absolutely hilarious take off on Humphry Bogart movies "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon". Don't expect "Columbo" out of this movie - see Peter Falk as Bogart and preferably watch the basis films first, and then the laughs are ongoing. Note the DVD is double-sided: Full Screen on one side and Wide Screen on the other. I've got a big smile as I'm writing this - maybe I'll watch it AGAIN tonight! :) mTp

I can’t tell you how hard I laughed during this movie! I love classic mystery films and as funny as this movie is, it stays true to the mystery tropes you see in these kinds of films. It had a very Mel Brooks style humor to it, so if you like those parodies you will enjoy this one.
