A while back before Denon discontinued the D2000/D5000/D7000, I heard that they were coming out with a new generation of headphones. I was excited because I thought they would build off of what everyone loved about the previous generation but what resulted was beyond my imagination. Gone was the beauty, the warm sound, and the thought and care that I had thought Denon had for their headphones. Well, needless to say, the Fostex TH600 represents basically a hybrid between the AH-D5000 and the AH-D7000 and is an incredibly durable and well-constructed headphone as well. It pretty much looks identical to the D5000/D7000 except that it is in matte black and terminates into a 1/4" plug. Even the cable construction is similar. I honestly would not be surprised if Fostex actually made the previous generation Denon headphones. Now to the sound. As long as you're a fan of closed-back cans, I think you will be more than satisfied. If you can't get over how closed-back cans sound due to the lack of airflow then I'm not sure any closed-back headphone can really satisfy your needs. These have great lows and mids, just like the Denons. Not overbearing or distorted but fairly warm and punctual. This is not to say that they're extremely precise as open-ended cans like the HD800s will not distort the mids like closed-back headphones will, but for closed-back cans, these are definitely good enough. I would compare these similarly to the Beyerdynamic T1. I think that I would prefer these more but I have not given it enough testing. Definitely would take these over anything else I've tested under $1,000 except for possibly Smeggy's modded T50RPs.Read full review
