Based on the play by Ernest Thompson, ON GOLDEN POND tells the deceptively simple tale of one family's summer. The story centers around the bickering but loving relationship between Ethel and Norman Thayer (Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda), an elderly couple who are spending their 48th summer at their New England country home and celebrating Norman's 80th birthday. When their independent, insecure daughter, Chelsea (Jane Fonda), and her new boyfriend, Bill Ray (Dabney Coleman), come for Norman's birthday, they also end up asking the couple to look after Billy Ray (Doug McKeon), Bill's teenage son, while they travel to Europe. Over the summer, Norman becomes closer to Billy Ray than he has ever been to his daughter, sparking Chelsea's long-repressed resentment when she returns. In this beautifully filmed story, there are many things going on along the surface of Golden Pond, including the presence of the loons--who represent all things wonderful about their summer house and their life to Ethel. Director Mark Rydell elicits deeply touching performances from his cast (particularly Henry Fonda in his final screen appearance), and the dialogue of Thompson's script is equally graceful. The odds were against this decidedly quiet, small ensemble piece when it was released in 1981, but the timeless material and the confident direction triumphed.

    Truly a classic worth watching more than once.

    I have enjoyed seeing this movie since I was a kid and first watched it in class at school. The characters are easy to get into, you really start to care about them and get deep into the movie and what is going on. I would recommend this movie to people of all ages, it truly is classic and well worth watching and you will want to see it again. One of the best movies I have seen, it sticks with you.

    Highly Disappointed

    I was so excited about purchasing this item. I always loved this movie. This was rated PG and was one of the reasons that i purchased it But it should have been rated at least PG-13 or "R". I was so very disappointed in the Language and if i had known beforehand i would never have watched it. I started counting God's name used in vain at least 6 or 7 times and then i stopped counting. I am just so thankful that my grandchildren were not snuggled up beside me when this words started coming out. I would Not recommend this movie.

    This movie calms the spirit and reminds us of the importance of family, life, and love.

    On Golden Pond was everything I had remembered it to be with wonderful iconic actors, a love story enhanced by the age of the "lovers," family strife, the fear of growing old, and age versus youth. The beautiful scenery and, at times, soft background music, made for a movie that calmed the soul. I could not have been more pleased with this DVD.

    Great title, great scenery.

    Movie shows how an older person , treats his young grandson better than he treated his own daughter growing up. They had a lot of animosity against each other, then after he had a heart attack, he realized life was short, and they made up. Compassionate moving movie. Even though I can't stand Jane Fonda, for her involvement with Vietnamese.

    Summed it up above.

    This is a 5 star review for me simply because not only was it the last movie for Henry Fonda but, to have his daughter Jane and Kathrine Hepburn in it as well was just great for everyone who loves them. There's nothing like having a movie with everything in it and just a fun classic movie you can watch for years to come and enjoy it like it was the first time seeing it at the movie theatre like I actually did.
