This phone is great for its designed purpose. I needed a phone that can take some physical abuse, e.g. get wet and banged around and dropped without damage. I also wanted a phone with loud, clear audio and long battery uptime. This Sonim XP5s phone has met and exceeded my expectations in all of those areas. I am pleased with my purchase. I am using the phone with a Mint Mobile SIM card without any trouble (T-Mobile towers). This phone also has one camera that does a surprisingly good job. What are the negatives? Sonim does not provide a warranty for phones not purchased through their authorized dealer network - this is not one. No user manual is provided, but you can download the one from AT&T. Note the AT&T manual does not fully cover all of the phone's functionality, and it describes features that are included with the phone but not useable unless you are and AT&T customer. A little experimentation was necessary to figure out how things work. For example, pressing and holding the menu button for a few seconds, when the phone is in standby mode, toggles the "torch" (camera flash LED) on and off. This is very handy but is not described anywhere in the manual. Another negative is an expensive accessory is required to use standard headphones (3.5mm stereo plug) with this phone. The FM radio will not function without headphones connected because the headphone wires are used for the antenna. The phone does have a web browser app, but it is impractical to use with the small screen and cursor keys. If you want a rugged GSM phone for voice and text, the Sonim XP5s is a good choice.Read full review

Excellent durable cellphone. It's about the same size as a smartphone but thicker. The battery life on it is extremely long. It's durable and will handle about anything that could happen to it which is the main reason we bought it. It was very easy to set up on my sprint network on the added line we got for our son. It'll hold up to abuse and not get him in much trouble since he can't download games. I still have my old smartphone that he uses for games that is just wifi only now that we hotspot for him to play games sometimes. Great alternative to get your kid a phone for their safety but not have to worry about it much.

This phone is excellent for what it does which is be a phone. Texting is easier to do than I though it would be with the T9 feature. While it is slightly slower than a full keyboard, it is entirely usable. The phone is very loud and clear and it gets excellent reception anywhere that I have been. It also has excellent battery life which normally lasts at least a week per charge. Admittedly I have not spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos on the Web Browser so that may reduce the time between charges. Speaking of which, the web browser is usable but it is very clunky without a touch screen and having to use the keyboard. It is easiest to click on a link in a text or to use the Google Search engine and click on the selections provided there. I am still working on learning some of the features. I have downloaded the manual from the Sonim Website which gives you much greater detail on how to use the phone though I was able to figure out most of it on my own. I have only made one attempt to use my phone as a mobile hot spot and I did not get it to connect properly for that. I also asked a couple of questions about the phone to Sonim support and they were very helpful and have given me a bunch of information on the Sonim Scout software and Web Portal. I am starting to research this to see what I can do with it in modifying the phone. I don't quite know if that is possible or not but I should know soon. On a final note, all of the descriptions I have seen regarding the XP5s show that the OS is a locked down form of Android 4.45. However, I have been updating my phone and as I was playing around with the specs of the phone, I saw that it is now running a version of Android 7. I don't know if that will allow me to unlock more of the features or not but I plan on finding out.Read full review

There is no way to type without the auto correct messing it up for you. I turned it off... it looks like a regular phone... however About phone says the system is Android 7 The ringer changes to random volume because the volume keys are always working, even if there is no media playing. The flashlight will turn on with a shake... but will not turn off unless you unlock the phone... and turn it off in the menu.

I like the phone for just basic calling and texting. I use my iPhone for anything internet. This phone is close to indestructible but has one major flaw. The battery cover has 2 little plastic nibs that slide into slots on the body. If one breaks from removing the cover too many times and over tightening when putting it back on there goes the waterproofing. I’ve had trouble getting warranty coverage with sonim in the past. You can always get another cover but if the slots crack on the body then it’s done and basically garbage because you need a new body. I’m not going to be messing with it so I don’t think it’ll break. I’m disappointed that they make the toughest phones and then cheap out and design such a flaw. They should have 4 screws instead of 2 and the problem is gone. Other than that it’s a great phone. Don’t expect iPhone smarts because this is just like the phones of the early 2000’s with slight internet capability. The only other stupid thing is they didn’t give you is a gps app. It’s got gps but you can’t use it like iPhone so you can’t see where you’re going or need to go. Stupid! Still I like the phone. This is totally for people in construction or are doing something that could easily wreck their phones. Even disabled people could make use of this phone. It’s waterproof without a case and it’s impossible to break the glass under regular use. You need a hammer to break it. I recommend it for anyone with those needs. Read full review
