These blu-ray sets have all been terrific, but this one is especially nice. It's a great set of stories, with a Doctor at the height of his popularity and one of the best TARDIS teams ever with Jo and the Doctor. The set starts off with the Doctor having to face his own past, in more ways than one, in "The Three Doctors". Patrick Troughton's Doctor really shakes things up, while the earliest Doctor (William Hartnell in his final role—he would die only two years alter), only able to advise from afar, keeps them in check. The next story, "Carnival of Monsters", is one of my favorites of the era, with the Doctor and Jo having to deal with being miniaturized and trapped in an alien zoo. (Ian Marter, who went on to play Harry Sullivan, makes his first appearance in this story.) "Frontier in Space" is a sprawling space opera, with both the Earth and Draconian Empires accusing the Doctor and Jo of fomenting war between them, so imagine their surprise when they are rescued by the Master! This turned out to be Roger Delgado's last appearance as the Master before his death in a car crash later in the year. But it's the Master's behind-the-scenes allies in this story who star in the next story, "Planet of the Daleks", where the Daleks' traditional enemies, the Thals, try to intercept a plot to make the Daleks invisible. Episode 3 of this story was recolored for the DVD set, but as good as that was, apparently the BBC was not, and they've gone back and done it again using new techniques and technology, and now I doubt anyone would ever notice that the original color edition had been lost. The set wraps up back on Earth with the environmental thriller, "The Green Death", which sees Jo Grant, after learning so much from the Doctor after three years, striking out on her own with the scientist she's fallen in love with. If you've ever seen the story "Death of the Doctor" in "The Sarah Jane Adventures", this is where Jo Jones' story begins. And if you haven't seen it, "Death of the Doctor" is included here as an extra! The extras, in fact, are the second best reason to buy this set, after the stories themselves. Each story comes with a "Making of" documentary, a "Behind the Sofa" reaction video from several "Who" celebrities, announcements and photos, and other bits of fun. There are some story-specific extras as well, and "Planet of the Daleks" has the option of updated special effects. So if you are fan of classic "Doctor Who", Jon Pertwee's Doctor, or '70s science-fiction television, I doubt you will be disappointed with this set.Read full review
