  • Another stellar performance from Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren's performance is stunning in this, cementing her position as one of Britain's most charismatic and versatile actors. This film charts the life of another impressive woman, Elizabeth the first, during various tumultuous stages of her life. What is particularly brilliant about this film is the way in which Mirren so convincingly shows the anguish and difficulty of Elizabeth the First's reign, in an age where Monarchs had purpose, strength and challenging lives. The most convincing part of Elizabeth's struggle which Mirren has perfected is Elizabeth's dilemma when it came to balancing business and pleasure, or more specifically, balancing the greater good of the country with her sexuality and desires. This is part of what makes this film so fascinating and potent - for every ...

  • A good introduction to the study of the Elizabethan Era.....

Excellent Story linereasonable accurate; but the genre did not give over to the reality of the periond; especially with regard to the stench, raggedness of the people, the decay and short living of the average individual, and notwithstanding the total ignorance of the plebian society. The executions were glossed, so too the tortuaous scenes; giving hardly any reality to the extreme pain of the rack, disembowling and hanging, not too mention the castration technics, all of which were untouched. It does not show the many assasination attempts on Elizabeth, nor of the spy bereaux which Elizabeth utilise with Walsingham and Cecil Burley. There is so much missed to give an acredited review, but, in all, the DVD was entertaining....

  • Elizabeth I starring Helen Mirren

I absolutely loved this film as it looks beyond the pomp & ceremony of Court life to tell the intimate story of Elizabeth's life as vulnerable & passionate and as a real woman facing the toughest of personal challenges. Extremely well acted, and a must for all fans of the Queen Elizabeth I. Very highly recommended.
