Well, I doubt Cpt. Kirk ever had too many times that he said, "Do you hear me now?" with his communicator. In fact, the sound quality on these replicas is WONDERFUL. it truly sounds as if Spock, Uhuru, Cpt. Kirk, and Scotty are talking to you! It is far better sound quality than the Star Trek Talk Back series. Now, I do have to share a pointer at this place in time. First, a delimiter: if you are unsure of yourself as to what I am telling you about and to do, don't do this but, instead, return your communicator for a refund. I know I did that with the first one I bought that acted up. However, when the same problem kept surfacing, I started to study the matter deeper. But, if you are unsure of yourself and fearful of voiding some warranty, then, by all means return your unit. Alright, to the "Fix": If your communicator only plays the "Try Me" phrase (something like, "Enterprise, this is Kirk")...anyway, if that is the only phrase you obtain once you have removed the plastic pull out tab, your communicator is not defective. Okay, did you notice the little slot where you pulled the plastic pull out tab from? Did you see that? Well, the problem is the internal switch just inside that slot. When your communicator is shipped, you noticed the lid was open. If the plastic pull tab did not exist, then, your batteries would run down as the lid being opened turns the communicator on. The plastic pull tab prevents that battery run down problem. So, now, make sure your pull tab is pulled out. If you hold the communicator up so as to view that slot directly in front of you, then you should be able to get your communicator working by doing this: Open the communicator lid (that connects that internal switch to the circuitry). Next, as you face that slot, do you have a very tiny, small flat head screw driver? If so, you can use that (or a creative substitute such as a super thin nail file) to fix this problem. Do you see inside the slot and notice a metal tab that is about midway in the slot? With the communicator lid open, push down on the left side of that metal tab in that slot. Press firmly but gently on the top of that metal tab. You should start hearing your communicator starting to attempt to work properly. What it is, is this: Inside the communicator are two switches that are at that slot of the plastic pull tab; the switches (one or both) are stuck open. By pushing them down against their contact point, your communicator should start functioning correctly. I had to fix mine this way and had to bend the contact down (in my case, the left side metal tab in the slot). It would seem that during manufacturing of these devices, some workers put too much force on inserting the plastic pull tab. This action bent the switch up (the switch is a normally closed switch and the bend makes it opened rather than normally closed). Anyway, good luck! These things are very fun!Read full review

The communicator is accurate in detail to the original Star Trek, but the sound is grainy and very hard to hear. The cover is thin plastic and could easily be broken. Also, the controls to hear the various messages are confusing and not spelled out well in the directions. You can barely make out the voices. It's a nice toy to add to the Star Trek collection, but could have been better constructed.

I came to find out that there is a 4th version of the Star Trek TOS communicator-this one. This has the polished metal lid and the additional voice responses as the polished plastic lid does. But again this one is the polished metal lid version. Most excellent! This along with all the Star Trek props I have been blessed with will be cherished and well cared for!
