Why was the world's most famous Irish novel first published in an obscure journal in New York? How did the first readers greet Joyce's masterpiece? This book goes behind the scenes to tell the story of the very first publication of Ulysses. It describes the enthusiasm Joyce's first editors evinced for his work, and the circumstances which led to their prosecution on the grounds that the thirteenth chapter of Ulysses was obscene. It also shows how Joyce rewrote Ulysses in response to that judgement while resident in Paris in 1921. The work is written in an accessible and engaging style, and should appeal to any reader with an interest in Joyce, Ireland, modern literature, and twentieth century cultural history., James Joyce's Ulysses was first published in New York in the Little Review between 1918 and 1920. How did this come about and what kind of journal was the Little Review? This study introduces the players behind the scenes-the people who played a role in bringing the Little Review serialization about, including Margaret Anderson, Jane Heap, Ezra Pound, and John Quinn. The Little Review Ulysses proved controversial from the outset and was ultimately stopped before Joyce had completed the work. The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice took successful legal action against the journal's editors, on the grounds that the final instalment of the thirteenth chapter of Ulysses was obscene. Serial Encounters discusses the nature of Ulysses as a serial text, and also looks at how Joyce responded once legal action was in train and the serialization had ended. How does the serial version of the text differ from the version most readers know, the iconic volume edition published in Paris in 1912 by Shakespeare and Company?
