Jeff Mitchell (Russell Crowe) is a gay man and the son of widower Harry Mitchell (Jack Thompson). Father and son live together during a time when both are looking for a life partner. Harry is supportive and fine with Jeff's sexuality; however, his new girlfriend doesn't like it. Harry's girlfriend and son wind up in a tense personal struggle for Harry. The film is based on the play by screenwriter David Stevens. "The Sum of Us" was the 1994 recipient of the Australian Film Institute's Best Adapted Screenplay award. Three years before Russell Crowe he became a famous Hollywood star in the 1997 show, "L.A. Confidential," he starred in this award winning, gay themed Australian drama. It is also the debuts of directors Geoff Burton and Kevin Dowling. I find this film notable because of the straight father, gay son relationship that works!Read full review
I first saw this movie on Netflix. I didn't expect to like it with the periodical cutaways by the main characters as they talked to the camera, however, by the end of it I found it thoroughly enjoyable and loved it enough to buy it on DVD. The story is set in Australia and is about a father and his grown gay son and their relationship with each other as well as those with others as each tries to find love and companionship while living together in the same house. Each encounters their own problems and each struggle to find a solution to those problems while dealing with the personality quirks of the other and the people that come into their lives. It's rather light-hearted most of the time, but with enough seriousness to illustrate a portion of real problems that families sometimes encounter when dealing with each other. I'd highly recommend this movie and found it worth the money paid.Read full review
I was familiar with the film but my VHS copy was becoming worn. I was pleased to find that this used DVD played without any problems and even more delighted by the unexpected bonus of having it presented in both 1.33:1 pan & scan and 1.85:1 (16:9) widescreen versions. The only special feature is the original theatrical trailer.

This movie is one of my favorites, and had a positive impact on me as a younger gay man not completely out of the closet. I would say it’s also a great film for parents of gay people, who are trying to come to terms with what that means.
