Someone once said Noah Webster was not a Founding Father, per se, but he was a Founding Uncle. Many homeschoolers who want to maintain a sense of traditional biblical education use this dictionary. It should be in every home, esp. Christian home. Compare the definitions in this dictionary to modern dictionaries and see the difference. Here are a few: "SAVIOR: one that saves or preserves; but properly applied only to Jesus Christ, the Redeemer, who has opened the way to everlasting salvation by his obedience and death, and who is therefore called the Savior, by way of distinction, the Savior of men, the Savior of the world. Gen. Washington may be called Saver, but not the Savior of his country". MARRIAGE: the act of uniting a man and a woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children". Get this dictionary...it's worth it!. And it is a very nice, large, and well-made book. There is a prophetic statement by Noah Webster in the preface many are unaware of. It reads, in part: "The United States commenced their existence under circumstances wholly novel and unexampled in the history of nations...and our language, within TWO CENTURIES, will be spoken by more people in this country, than any other on earth, except the Chinese...It has been my aim in this work, now offered to my fellow citizens, to ascertain the true principles of the language in its orthography and structure...which we shall not be ashamed to bequeath to THREE HUNDRED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, who are destined to occupy, and I hope, to adorn the vast territory with its jurisdiction..." Mind, this was written in 1828. TWO HUNDRED YEARS as Noah Webster foretold. What is the population 200 years later?. A little over 300 million just as he stated. I encourage you to get this dictionary. It's also just plain fun. Who knows how much longer it'll be available.Read full review

Language has been getting lost in the muck of the last couple of hundred years. I love being able to look up works in this dictionary to help me know the definition of words I may not understand the full meaning of (as in the King James Bible) and also love to look up the meanings of words as they were then. A lot of subtle and not-so-subtle changes have been happening in the English language just in my lifetime! It even has some surprises, like its definition of the word superstitious. I could not help but get the feeling the original dictionary author(s) was/were thinking of some of the old Catholic practices, such as paying in advance of sinning to have them absolved. In fact, this older dictionary has no reference whatever toward things we think of today with that word, such as black cats crossing our paths or walking under ladders.Read full review

I can't say too much about this dictionary, as of yet, as I've only had it a short while. What I can say is that I like it for it's archaic definitions. There are a lot of words out there that are no longer used in everyday language, yet are still out there. They need to be defined as there are still valuable books out there that were written using words that have either changed meaning, or simply been abandoned. Some of the newer dictionaries either don't define them or list them as archaic. I have been in search of an older dictionary for quite some time as they writters of these books appreciated words and knowledge. I never knew the word 'conversation' to mean a lifestyle, I only knew it to mean speach between people. So when reading this word in my bible, there was something missing in the context of the passage. I am not one that believes you should have to be some great schoolar to have to retranslate from the original tongue the scriptures or any other book for that matter. You just need a good dictionary to be able to understand the words as written. The 1828 Noah Webster dictionary of the English language is an excellent resource. A worthy study aid for any serious student of the great works of literature; be it the bible or shakespeare.Read full review
We are so happy we added this gigantic dictionary to our family heirloom library! It's beautiful and fairly easy to read. It's super easy to look up words as every column on each page are headed with the first three letters of the first word in that column. Although the first word I looked up was not in this dictionary I was still able to figure out its meaning as prefixes and root words are defined. I'll be able to use this dictionary many times! I feel like this dictionary is worth a lot more than I paid for but if it would have cost more I would not have purchased it. Thank you for the wonderful value!

This is absolutely THE classic dictionary that every family should have. Noah Webster was a Godly man who compiled this work in 1828 -- the first truly American dictionary. He gives complete definitions, with examples from the Bible, to fully explain the true meaning of each word. Just compare his definition of terms like, "marriage", "education", "sin", and "law" to today's modern definitions. The modern dictionaries impart a secular worldview, as opposed to Webster's 1828 work which clearly demonstrates a Biblical worldview. My family uses our dictionary on a regular basis, and I am glad that my children are learning the true meaning of the words in our language. We all should have a Webster's 1828 Dictionary on our shelves.
This is the best dictionary to own. This is the large hardcover of the 1828 Webster's Dictionary of the English Language. It is the most complete, and accurate. Every American Home should have at least one in their library. It has it's foundations, in the foundations of America. If you lack the knowledge of your American History, this book will be a great start, having historical notes for and aft. Thank You.

This dictionary will give you the real definition of words that in recent time has been distorted or changed completely. The 1828 Noah Webster dictionary is also a great aid in the study of the King James Bible to understand definitions that have been lost to time and pernicious ways of the rebellious.

Reading, speaking, are done with language to communicate. We should all know what we mean and what is meant when communicating with others. The truth about the words we speak and the consequences of error should make one want to change how they interact with others. We’re never too old to relearn the correct way to love in word and deed.
