A common man's point of view.
To make sure you are not confused or misled, be advised that this review is about Le Corsaire, with the American Ballet Theatre, starring Angel Corella, Julie Kent, and Ethan Stiefel. My copy came from China and is of very good quality. I believe it is an authentic and legal version. Le Corsaire is not available in the USA at present, and is only available used at outrageous prices, if it can be found at all. I could be wrong about this, but I believe it is true. This ballet is FAN--DOGGONE--TASTIC, and that may even be an understatement. The story line or plot may not be all that good, but it DOES have one, and the artistic director Kevin McKenzie does a very good (and funny) job of explaining it to you. The ballet was filmed live from the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa ... As far as a plot is concerned, it is not all that important anyway, since the dancing and music are FAR more important, and is what makes this ballet so FAN--DOGONE--TASTIC. Would you believe that there are five different composers represented in the musical score of this ballet? They are, Adolphe Adam, Cesare Pugni, Leo Delibes, Riccardo Drigo, and Prince Oldenbourg. The Pacific Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Ermanno Florio, and the sound quality is superb. A beautiful full color brochure and a very nice keep case is included with the disc even though it came from China. The most important thing I can tell you about this ballet is that it IS available, and at a reasonable cost from China. I believe it is ONLY AVAILABLE from China right now, and has a different picture on the keep case than the one shown in this Ad. Actually Item #180300767038 from Hong Kong is (as of 11-6-08) the version I am refering to. You will have to search for it though. You want the Year 2000 copy, actually filmed in 1999. The China version is a widescreen version. The Kirov version is NOT widescreen. The major players in this American Ballet Theatre production are, Ethan Stiefel ("The hero" [also in The Dream]), Julie Kent ("The heroine"), Angel Corella ("The Slave", stared in Swan Lake w/Gillian Murphy, another fab ballet by ABT), Joaquin De Luz, ("The Mutinous Pirate"), Vladimir Malakhov, (The Slave Trader), Paloma Herrera, ("The Slave Girl" and OH! is she beautiful). Gillian Murphy has a bit part as one of the Odalisques (Slave Girls). All of those mentioned are virtuoso dancers. The pas de deux in the bedroom scene is as sensual as any dance sequence I have ever seen in ballet, but is still mild enough to be seen by children of any age, including me at 77 years young. Look for and buy this ballet. I highly recommend it to you.

My favorite Corsaire version
I love this version of Le Corsaire. The male dancers are astounding, and the female dancers are brilliant. I also love the little interview insertions with the dancers and the director, where they explain the plot. It's fun to see the characters out of their role and to be able to realize the difference the costumes and make-up does.
