About this product

Product Information

The Shure Model SM81 is a high-quality, unidirectional condenser microphone designed for studio recording, broadcasting, and sound reinforcement. Its wide frequency response, low noise characteristics, and low RF susceptibility have made it a standard for applications involving acoustic instruments, especially guitar, piano, and cymbals. The SM81 is ruggedly constructed. It operates on phantom power and performs over a wide range of temperatures and humidity conditions. It is furnished with a swivel adapter, attenuator-switch lock, foam windscreen, and case for carrying and storage. Features: 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. Flat response curve for accurate reproduction of sound sources. Low noise and high output clipping level. Low distortion over a wide range of load impedances. Cardioid polar pattern, uniform with frequency and symmetric about axis, providing maximum rejection and minimum coloration of off-axis sounds. Low RF susceptibility. Selectable low-frequency response: flat, 6 or 18 dB/octave rolloff. 0 dB/10 dB lockable attenuator switch. Phantom powering (DIN 45 596 voltages of 12 to 48 Vdc). Rugged steel construction for durability. Field-usable over wide range of temperature and humidity conditions.

Extremely fast service. A competitor called B&H photo wanted 4-6 weeks to deliver but these guys did it in 4 days. Everyone knows about Mogami cables reputation, I own 3 of them. You either have Mogami cables or you wish you could afford them. Pricey but worth it. Lifetime warranty too. That's why the professionals us Mogami cables. I brought this to hook up to my Mesa Boogie Road king II to my 4X12 Mesa Boogie Road king cabinet...

Seller is very slow to respond. Slow to ship, ordered on 3rd and received in 12th even though states 2 day shipping. There was a part missing even though it said brand new. I identified part and even confirmed on mfr website it is included. Seller says they need to confirm with mfr and then I never hear from seller again. Avoid this seller!

Shipping wise, Good seller to buy from. They were fast, came complete in package (with minimal damage to the box alone,) and exactly what was promised. Sound wise, I have had mixed results with it, with reports from others that my voice comes through more muffled and gravely. Maybe not the best to use for livestreams.

Great mic! Love it for acoustic guitar

This mic sounds great. It gets a good spectrum of sound and is a great compliment to my arsenal of mics for recording acoustic guitar mostly :)

  • Shure's Swiss Army Condenser.

Can't ignore the versatility of this microphone. From instrument to voice, live stage to studio, I have not come across a situation where the SM-81 is not a viable solution. I own plenty of mics from Shure, Sennheiser, AKG, and AT, and they're all awesome. At this mic's price point, there are few that can compare.

  • It's Good

This mic is clear and accurate in its reproduction of sound. I simultaneously use a Rode nt2 for my vocals and the Shure SM81 for my guitar. I'm able to do this w/o picking up my voice on the Shure, but getting a good, clear guitar. I really like this setup.

  • You Get What You Pay For

Good bang for the buck. My Bluegrass playing wife uses it as a backup instrumental mic for guest guitar and mandolin players. Compared to a Neumann KM-184 it's flatter and less outstanding in the mix but has a wider range of tones because of its pad and bass rolloff.
