Synopsis
BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS AND REAL PEOPLESeptember 12, 1943. Venice California.A young man stumbles from his wrecked English car and dies in a bean field of a stab wound in his back. But this young man is no ordinary young man. He is the son of a rich New England Aristocratic family, an alumnus of Yale, and, of all things, the actor who portrayed The Masked Marauder in the Saturday matinee kiddie serial. The investigating officers, Lieutenant Adam Freeman and his young partner, Detective Harry Lloyd, are prodded by LAPD Chief Douglas Gaines for a quick case closure. But that is made impossible due to being blocked in their investigations by every powerful institution in Los Angeles, including the LAPD.Pressured for a speedy end to the case, Freeman enlists, for the first time ever, Female Officers of the department to assist in his investigations. Sergeant Sarah Lovejoy is in charge of the female officers assigned to the Homicide Bureau. She's mid Thirties and forceful. And she has secrets of her own.Raven Haired Officer Olive Branch has a wicked sense of humor that she doesn't dare show around Sergeant Sarah, but is enjoyed by her associate Officer Laura Murphy and Olive's fiancé Larry.Officer Laura Murphy is blonde and efficient. Her Cincinnati background comes in handy as they struggle with other ethnicities who don't speak much English. Laura is unattached, but she's working on changing that. These three ladies prove invaluable to the investigation. The case quickly centers on two locations, RKO Studios and a mysterious, walled and gated, Tudor mansion high in the Hollywood Hills. In that mansion reside the widow of the murder victim, Madame Helga Heller, and her maid, Chelsea. Also on the property is a German refugee who, like the widow, musical Diva Madame Heller, fled Germany to avoid persecution and worse from Adolph Hitler. Chelsea, a lusty "French" Maid from Texas, helps Detective Lloyd in ways he would never have suspected. The case turns up very interesting characters and addresses a variety of subjects including the underworld of Gay Los Angeles / Hollywood in the film and other communities. Some unhappy discoveries lead to other members of the case from outside the department becoming victims themselves.Played against the advent of Los Angeles in the era of World War II, the ever present knife edge concern that the citizens felt for potential eminent death of loved ones or attack by the Japanese Empire, the story takes on a separate urgency in an era of unexplored morality and concerns for most of the population. As serious as the situation was, it was also possible for the separate and lonely to find love and romance in addition to the sexually adventurous mores the new War carried with it. Lieutenant Adam Freeman, a widower, may have stumbled upon love in his own headquarters building. Officer Laura Murphy, "Murph" as the detectives begrudgingly called her, hopes to find something lasting in the unlikely prospects of Detective Harry Lloyd, the Playboy of the Precinct. And each new discovery leads them ever deeper into the twisted lives of the rich and powerful in 1943 Los Angeles. From studio heads, studio stars, studio henchmen, corrupt state and local officials, the masking of the activities of the Rich and Famous becomes the more important issue to them. The death of one minor actor means little to them if investigating that death could uncover their secretive lives. But, it does matter to Lieutenant Adam Freeman and his team.
