Synopsis
In 1880, Joel Chandler Harris, a moderate white Southern journalist, published a collection of black folktales, proverbs, songs, and character sketches based on stories he had heard as a child. In his introduction, Robert Hemenway discusses the book's enduring popularity, pointing out that the character of Uncle Remus, the docile and grandfatherly ex-slave storyteller, is a utopian figure-a literary creation by Harris that reassured white readers during the tense and tentative Reconstruction. By contrast, the feisty Brer Rabbit was a mainstay of black folklore long before Harris heard of his exploits. Brer Rabbit's cunning and revolutionary antics symbolically inverted the slave-master relationship and satisfied the deep human needs of a captive people. Book jacket., The dialect, lore, and flavor of black life in the nineteenth-century South is portrayed as it appeared to Georgia-born Joel Chandler Harris in Uncle Remus's "Legends of the Old Plantation." For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Generally as described, with small stain at back ?food stain. Thin booklet rather than a book. Reasonable price for the scarcity of the booklet. However, shipping fee seems quite high for a thin booklet to Australia ($15.57 USD). I assume EBAY makes money on the shipping. Arrived within expected time (16 days). Happy with seller. Thanks

  • I need a translated version

I always wanted to read this book. I’m having a problem understanding what Uncle Remus is saying. He talks in a broken English, full of misspelling and apostrophes. It’s very hard to understand. Some of the stories I have now idea what is happening. If there’s a translation in proper English get that instead.
