Hermann vuole mostrare la sua visione del Medioevo, un'epoca dura, dove la violenza è onnipresente e la natura ostile, siamo lontani quindi dal "cavalier servente" e dalla principessa "cortese". Questa serie si completa in 10 titoli, ogni volume prende il titolo dal nome di uno dei personaggi che il cavaliere Aymar di Bois-Maury incrocia nel corso della storia. In questo caso si tratta di Khaled. Il sole, la sete e la fame stanno debilitando la resistenza di tutti, nel castello di Bernard de Mance assediato da mesi. In segreto Aymar decide di portare soccorsi a quei valorosi soldati. Ma all'ombra dei minareti si tramano strane alleanze e sottili tradimenti.
