The ultimate Yardbirds compilation!
The Yardbirds like many other '60s groups (especially the Animals) did not enjoy the best management over their existence, with the consequence that much of their recorded legacy (especially between UK & USA releases) is not easily assembled.
This great 2 CD set overcomes that quandary with high quality transfers (courtesy Bill Inglot and Rhino Records) of all their singles as a group through all their different permutations of lead guitarists (Clapton, Beck & Page). This is easily the best compilation of their full history available plus includes a fantastic extensive booklet with great coverage of the band's history and details of single releases.
The Yardbirds always seemed to enjoy a charmed life lasting longer than many other groups would have done with the personnel changes they suffered and becoming more popular in the USA than UK to the end, though bad management meant the final financial rewards were sadly not as great.
Inevitably the tension between having chart singles and their blues roots leads to wildly different styles on show - the hard blues band of the early LP tracks from "Five Live Yardbirds"; the pop almost choral singles of "For your love" and "Evil hearted you"; and the psychedelic tinged rave ups including "Over under sideways down" and "Happenings ten years time ago".
Only 60s music could encompass such a mixture of styles it seems!
