The Hilliard Ensemble TITLE: Renaissance & Baroque Vocal Music (7CD) - The male-voice quartet the Hilliard Ensemble was founded in 1974 and was disbanded after 40 years in 2014. It's singers were praised by Gramophone for "the superlative purity of their vibrato-free tone, perfect blend and balance of voices and immaculate intonation." The blend between the voices is finely controlled, the tone mellow and the tuning spectacularly accurate, giving rise to an organ-like sonority that is genuinely thrilling," wrote Gramophone magazine, praising the Hilliard Ensemble's four singers, who excelled in an extraordinary variety of music over a 40-year career. This seven-CD collection extends from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, offering music by composers from England, France, Flanders and Germany.

    A different kind of Baroque Music

    This is a nice set. Normally The Hilliard Ensemble and the music they perform is very appealing to me. For some reason, entirely in my head and nothing to do with these performances or the sound quality, I find this set not as enjoyable. I cannot explain it and I am continuing to listen, but I find this music somehow very stark, not at all warm or inviting. It conveys a sense of foreboding and despair rather than enlightenment and optimism. It is dark, not fun to hear.
