Initially I was provided with programming software that did not work with my product. With the vendors help I was able to download the correct software. I eventually got the software to program the radios but I had to spend a fair bit of time to work it out. The program defaults to Chinese so you have to click on the "menus" to find where to set language. Once this is done the software works but is quite clunky e.g. no persistence in the file-open dialog box so you have to click through all the folders to open the file you opened last time. Help doesn't work and many messages are odd in English (probably makes perfect sense in Chinese!). Needs good usability testing and improvement.

The radio is good value for money, no doubt. However, the FM deviation is too low. I was not heard properly when transmitting in comparison to others. When measured, the FM deviation was not the required +/- 5kHz but instead it was hardly touching 3 kHz. This is a major drawback. The overall quality is so good that one would not expect such a fundamental problem. The headset microphone has a diameter of approx. 5mm but the short arc opening in the plastic housing is just about 0.5mm wide. I opened up the hole with a drill to 5mm. This improved the situation to an extent. Newsgroups confirm this problem with Baofeng radios in the past. Highly avoidable by increasing the modulation audio path gain, but Baofeng has missed that. The supplied antenna is of poor gain on 2m. Front-end desensitisation is quite strong when operating near broadcast stations (8km in my case). The situation changed drastically when I used a small 2m magnetic loop antenna due to the inherent selectivity of this antenna. Power output is definitely not 8W but just 6W as has been observed by many other users. I measured it with a professional power meter. 6W - not 8W at full battery power. It has more power than UV5R etc. Reception is very good, similar to my Yaesu FT252. The stock antenna is really impressive for its size. You won't find much information about this unit (GT-5TP) as you will find documentation, reviews, etc for other Baofeng radios. Easy to operate, I love the dual band receiving capability and the dual band PTT as well. It speaks loudly, but it can't be regulated at maximum volume if you mind hearing distorted audio. Charger is very lightweight and doesn't have the GND pin, battery either. It produces a lot of noise on HF frequencies when charging.

I purchased two of these. the first one had the on off dial switch break before I could use it. The second one is ok but the quality of manufacture doesn't seem to be there compared to one I purchased 12 months earlier. Also I could not get it to program. Tried many software options including chirp and several types of laptops but it wouldn't connect.

I now have the baofeng gt 3tp & the baofeng gt 5tp (I'm starting to collect these radios). I prefer the aesthetics of the 5tp. The duel receive is a good function to have on the 5tp. Noticed the scan function was slower on the 5tp compared to the 3tp and the push to talk button on the 5tp wasn't as pronounced on the duel push. Otherwise I really love this new addition.
