Kylie put her music up with this work. She brought a lot of alternative and rock vibe to the songs and the result is perfect. Five stars.
Kylie's 1998 album, and her 2nd & last album for the Deconstruction record lable. self titled in the UK; this Aussie import has the title "Impossible Princess" written on the sleeve. Sadly it is not written on the disk but hey ho such is life! Kylie co-wrote all the tracks on this album working with some truly great talent. This album is a million miles away from her sugar-coated pop of the 80s and even her more cool dance of the 00's. Kylie fans either love or hate this album - I love it! The albums opens with Kylie's self penned "TOO FAR" Prepare to be shocked - it's a cross between trendy pop and drum 'n' bass. would not feel out of place on the soundtrack to a horror movie. The production by Brothers in Rhythm add an eerie piano and pulsing strings add to the feel of this. Next up we are offered a cool slice of indie pop in the form of "COWBOY STYLE" BiR share writing and production notes on this. The track is very suitable to include in Kylies live sets and fills the mind with pictures as you listen to it. The sign of a truely great song. This was issued as an Aus only single. top marks Track 3 see's the first single to be lifted off the album. "SOME KIND OF BLISS" Sees Kylie team up with the Manic street preachers. This is instantly Manics with their trademark guitar rifts and horns, beats and tamborines. One of Kylies least successful singles only reaching number 22 on the UK singles chart but one of my all time fave Kylie tracks. Again another track that makes pictures in the mind. I would love to see this included in Kylies live sets. "DID IT AGAIN" feel good grungy pop (hows that for a description!) and the second single lifted off the album. Love this track too and wonderfully produced. Top marks again. The 3rd and final UK single taken off the album is the blissful "BREATHE" Here we have the album version of the track. slightly slower than the single remix which is ever so slightly faster, dreamier. Co-written/produced by Dave Ball & Ingo Vauk. This track is far more superior than kylies later slow offerings such as 'chocolate' This album version loses marks for being a bit too ploddy but still a great song with massive potential. "SAY HEY" see's kylie go ultra trendy club/dance. another BiR production. love the bath water sound effect underlaying in this track. "DRUNK" again shows off the great production of BiR. The song moves and grows but one of my least fave tracks on the album. Track 8 - "I DON'T NEED ANYONE" see's Kylie again team up the Manics. trademark MSP. The flute makes this an ultimate 90's summer anthem. Lyrically simple. again the song picks up as it gets going. "JUMP" see's Kylie team up with Rob Dougan, an ultra trendy dance producer AKA Clubbed to death. The song just plods along and this is the album turkey track. Track 10 is more with it. "LIMBO" Fast in pace. lyrically great. Was also a B side to the single 'Some kind of bliss' It'll have you singing along 'lost in limbo (limbo limbo) for ages. Track 11 - another working with Dave & Ingo. "THROUGH THE YEARS" If i was to compare this style of song to a modern artist it would be a colaberation between Natasha Bedingfield and Mark Ronson. And finally we come to the albums closing track and a Kylie fan fave that has stood the test of time. "DREAMS" This song is perfection. One of my fave KM albums that i keep going back to. I recomend this to any Kylie fanRead full review
This album is definitely different to 'pop Kylie' but there are so many gems on this album, you'd be surprised just how good it is. If you're a Kylie fan and haven't got this album, shame on you! If you're buying this for someone who likes Kylie's usual stuff, and you're wondering whether to buy it, please do so. Kylie's written all the tracks on this album, mostly with others but also two completely on her own (yes, words and music, no-one else involved) so this really does show a more comprehensive view of Kylie. There are a couple of great tracks to dance to (Limbo is just brilliant, and should have been a single), and one of her own songs, Say Hey is absolutely amazingly simple, but brilliant - turn it up and listen to the clarity in her voice - another that should have been a single. Too Far, Limbo, Say Hey, Breathe (was a single, and so understated), Drunk, Some Kind of Bliss... there really are some great tracks. The album wasn't pulled because of poor sales - the album was originally going to be titled Impossible Princess; then Diana died, so the album was retitled and delayed out of respect. It didn't sell well, because nothing sold well at that time. I've rated this as Good not Excellent, because Fever really has got to be Kylie's best, but then it did sell over 7 million copies! So, if you are only after Kylie's ultimate pop music, this isn't for you. If you're after some truly beautiful (although often sad) lyrics, including some great collaborations, this is for you. Go on, add an absolute classic to your collection. Oh, and enjoy it. GXGRead full review
