I was very happy with this book, being new to the area of flash photography. I personally didn't read it straight through, but jumped around from section to section as I needed, and the book is written perfectly for that! Either straight through or in smaller pieces, this book is pretty much full of information and tips for shooting with flash. The author has sections throughout the book in which she tells you what she does for certain shots, how she thought out the setup and lighting...very useful! It's great to get insight in to a photographer's mind, and really have access to what they were thinking when they made a photo, not just the hard facts of shutter speed and aperture, but the entire conception behind it. As a beginner, this book came highly recommended and has helped me a lot. If you've got the photography basics covered, and are ready to start controlling your light, pick up this book and learn how to do it!Read full review
Mastering Flash Photography by Susan McCartney was published in 1997, long before the Great Digital Take-Over. This book covers the essentials of using flash units for the basic beginner to handling flash for the more advanced shooters. Susan does a decent job explaining how flash units work, covering everything from Xenon gas to GN numbers, so the basic technical information is provided for those who have never handled flash. Susan also provides many applications for using and handling flash, from bouncing flash, hand held flash, combing long exposures with flash, and so on. The book is laid out nicely. You can pick a chapter that interest you and begin reading. There is no need to start from page 1 and race your way though ( although I suggest reading the book in it's entirety). There is a nice gallery at the end of the book. Six of the worlds finest flash photographers share their thoughts on flash photography and offer sample photos. A rather nice touch and fitting way to close a book on flash photography. I recommend this book to all enthusiast and shooters of every level.Read full review

This will be a pretty short review. I read this book cover to cover hoping to find something that might apply to todays portable flashes. Alas I found not much. I learned most of this technique when I was 15 in school, I'm 68 now. Light is light and it hasn't changed that i know of. The rules for using it haven't changed. I wouldn't recomend this book to a friend. Maybe to a 7th grade photo class.
