Padma Lakshmi is a familiar face on Bravo TV's "Top Chef." One thing I learned when I received this book was that not only being a beautiful model, turned actress, she was famous for being married to controversial author Salman Rushdie until this last summer. Now Padma is turning her culinary expertise in a literary direction....her books. The recipes have a strong emphasis on Indian fare. She was raised by a single mother both in L.A. & N.Y. so in her younger years she had a chance to sample everything from Polish sausages to Vietnamese steamed fish to Caribbean curries. Padma has traveled to India, Singapore and Tokyo and studied abroad in Spain. Her cookbook contains a mixture of recipes like Mexican corn bread with jalapenos and chorizo, curried Chinese long beans with black eyed peas, Jamaican johnny cake and Tuscan lemon pudding. There is also a section on pickles and chutneys, with offerings of chili honey butter, fresh mint and date dipping sauce and tangerine peel pickle. Some meals take a bit of prep and cooking time but there are also many recipes that can be executed during a weekday, like the chicken dish from India that calls for nothing more exotic than cashews, which are pureed into a powder and stirred into a creamy sauce flavored with honey, stock and crushed red peppers. If you want to try your hand at some different recipes and still have fun in the kitchen this is a delicious way to do it.Read full review
