This was the second release by Chick Corea's Return to Forever and features Corea just on electric piano (with excellent use of wah-wah pedal), Joe Farrell on Saxaphones and Flute and Stanley Clarke on upright bass. Unlike the middle-period RtF this is not pure instrumental music but features Flora Purim on vocals (including some amazing scat vocals). The drums are provided by Airto Moriera (with additional percussion by Ms Purim) who has a much lighter touch than Lenny White, who replaced him on later albums. Although one of the defining jazz-rock/jazz-fusion LPs of the early 70's, the music is much closer to the swing/bop era jazz than later RtF albums, and all the better for it! This is jass of the highest order. The album contains the original version of Chick Corea's legendary composition "Spain" (and I notice that, unlike the original vinyl album, the booklet correctly acknowledges Joaquin Rodrigo as the composer of the main theme).Read full review
