I teach, and for beginners I recommend Jim Dunlop 0.38mm picks to learn strumming - they're far too light and don't sound good, but they make it so much easier until you get more confident. For picking individual notes I recommend Jim Dunlop 0.60mm picks - they're stiff enough to grab the string but still a little flexible. These 0.46mm picks I recommend for general use when it's mostly strumming with a little picking - they're flexible enough to strum and make an acceptable sound while being just about stiff enough to grab the odd note. Of course it's est to have a tin-full of picks for different purposes, but if you only have one, this is a great multipurpose pick.
