    Unexpectedly good

    I bought this yesterday, and after only one listen (yes people, my opinions are fresh - not being one of those who try to popularize their worn-in favorites) I can say that this is a very fine collection of tracks. Especially if you like a good drumbreak. When the Last Poets were making music for Bill Laswell's Celluloid label, they were doing so in the context of hip hop's reappropriation of the funk heritage. Funk didn't stop in the seventies, either, but started to play with new electronic gear such as drum computers. Celluloid was a label in the middle of this, deeply drenched in the electrofunk sound that many today consider badly dated. Some may have aged worse than other stuff, but I think this still sounds remarkably fresh. I suspect these tracks have been remixed to a certain ...
