Newer belts are meant to be shorter, when compared to an old one. That's what makes the brush roll spin, the tension between brush roll and belt. If installed properly the belt purchased will work and last as expected.
The belt you installed snapped because it was not installed properly.
If you have no clue as to how to properly install the belt you purchased, seek professional assistance because you can easily end up burning your motor.
