This is a sleeper pick that belongs in any Top 20 list of sports- or soundtrack-themed movie lists. It is brimming with talent on the brink of stardom, including Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino, Madonna, and even a cameo by Forest Whitaker. Pros: Quirky, offbeat characters playing against stereotype. For example, Louden Swain, played by Modine, represents athletic and aesthetic values not often expressed in so-called teen movies. Honest and straight dialogue and scenes about tough subjects: teen pressures, self-identity, goals, and career aspirations - realized and unrealized Acting is great, and the high school wrestling scenes, from practice to the meets, are realistic and make it one of the best sports movies I've ever seen. Music is superb, though heavily invested in the 1980's, it has the requisite inspirational music by Journey, but the appearance by Madonna and the kick-out-the-jams song "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider perfectly captures the gladiatorial theme of the wrestling final when Swain meets Shute in the ring. Cons: It is an '80's movie, so the hair is big. If you aren't used to straight talk on sex, this may be uncomfortable to sit through, but it is frank and honest to a fault. Summary: this is a great movie. I watch it when I was younger, then got to watch it again with my teen aged son. He loved it, and thought it was a pretty cool movie. It can be a bit melodramatic at times, but you get carried along by the people and you care where they may end up in the end. I highly recommend this movie.Read full review
Typical 80's film combining a solid soundtrack with good acting. If you're a sports fan and like the Hoosiers type of film this is for you.

Good acting by a young Mathew Modine. I liked the script/story when I saw it when it first came out and I still like it now. He had the persistance and determination to succeed! He overcame checking out when the pressure was on and it showed how all the people in his life supported him in their own way, especially his father and boss; and how they all came together to see him wrestle Shup. I recommend it for any high school/college wrestler and anyone else that wants to enjoy watching the "not phony sport of wrestling". It makes you feel good and remember your younger days for a little bit too.
Well done. Nice supporting cast, including Madonna singing several songs in the local bar. Look for a very young Forrest Whittaker on the wrestling team. Many bike riders have seen American Flyer the same holds true for wrestlers and this movie.
