About this product

Product Information

Brighton, 1964. Organised crime has moved into this sleepy English seaside town. Ambitious young gangster Pinkie Brown (Controls Sam Riley), is determined to stop other gangs taking over his patch, but when he kills a rival, vital evidence falls into the innocent hands of an impressionable young waitress, Rose (Andrea Riseborough, Made in Dagenham and Never Let Me Go). Pinkie romances Rose to stop her talking, but her employer Ida (Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, The Queen) is suspicious of their relationship. A year before the abolition of the death penalty, can Pinkie trust Rose not to betray him and can Rose trust Pinkie not to make her his next victim? Or will the distrustful Ida win out?

  • Excellent portrayal 60s crime genre

Very dark and of the early 60s crime and dismal genre. The entertainment factor is hampered by fear of poking one’s toe in the murk of the whole darkness/Catholicism Graham Greene almost Thomas Hardy dragging down of the spirit. The one character, Rose is very Pollyanna but the end of the film leaves you wondering if it was denial or mental inability to be rational. Helen Mirren is her usual Agrade acting self. Several other underworld characters with duality of purpose provide interest. It is not a put your feet up. Milk and cookies film it is a Grahame Greene fades to black .

  • A good look at the seedier side of life

This was quite a good series that I picked up by chance. I was amazed that it didn't receive some acclaim in Australia but then it wasn't a "reality" show but a reality check. Highly recommended for a good drama.
