About this product

Product Information

Bewitching art experts and enthusiasts alike for centuries, the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries hang today in the Cluny Museum in Paris. In each, an elegant lady and a unicorn stand or sit on an island of grass surrounded by a rich background of animals and flowers. Little is known about them except that they were woven toward the end of the fifteenth century and bear the coat of arms of a wealthy family from Lyons.Tracy Chevalier takes readers back to the tapestries’ creation, giving life to the men who designed and made them, as well as the wives, daughters, and servants who exercised subtle (and not so subtle) influences over their men. Like the many different strands of wool and silk that were woven together into one cloth, the lives and fates of these people entwine in complex patterns, crisscrossing as they seek desires sensual and spiritual, temporal and eternal. An extraordinary story exquisitely told, Tracy Chevalier’s The Lady and the Unicornweaves history and fiction into a beautiful, timeless, and intriguing literary tapestry that rivals in grace and grandeur the masterpiece that inspired it.

  • A finely woven tale

Tracy Chevalier has taken a historical item, a tapestry and postulated it's provenance. Many characters are introduced, the noble gentleman who commissioned the famous Lady and Unicorn tapestry, the artist who painted the concept for the project, and the weaver who brought to idea to fruition. Woven into this tale are the nobleman's young daughter, her mother, the art dealer, and many other characters who bring this story to life. I listened to the unabridged audiobook and was taken back it time as the details were recounted on how the tapestry was produced. I assure you this is a great story that will mesmerize you. I give it 100% feedback!

  • lady and the unicorn

I read every thing she writes. Romance, history and mystery. Excellent books. This books also has a sister book called the seventh unicorn, the book is by a different author, but adds to the story nicely.

  • Medieval Socioeconomics in The Lady and the Unicorn

Tracy Chevalier has written a light and fanciful tale around an historical piece of art, the tapestry known now as The Lady and the Unicorn. An enjoyable read, the novel focuses on each individual's involvement in making the tapestry: from the nobleman's first order to the artist, the painter's lust for women, an order change from the nobleman's wife, on to the weaver's hands and more. It a lark to see how often and how much and how oddly the characters impact the final masterpiece.

  • Interesting and fun.

    Very interesting reading so far.
