Standard Catalog Superior to Beckett price guide?
First off, let me tell you that I am a collector in every sense and have been for the past 25 years. I started buying packs of baseball cards with my scraped together nickels and dimes. I didn't even watch baseball, I just liked the collecting aspect. Many years and THOUSANDS of dollars later, I am still collecting. I bought the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards because I am also a Tobacco baseball card collector. Most of these cards are around 100 years old and aren't collected widely. Normal price guides may have a few of these cards listed (Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Honus Wagner) but for most collectors, knowing the price of a card that they will never see, let alone own doesn't help. The Standard Catalog lists EVERY card from these Tobacco sets - It lists every card from every regional ... The Standard Catalog lists EVERY card from these Tobacco sets - It lists every card from every regional issue - It lists pretty much every card that you could have ever picked up from anywhere at anytime. Being a collector, I would always pick up cards when I could; 7-11 slurpee cards, Mothers cookies cards, Sportflics, whatever... Most of these cards are forgotten and NEVER priced in Beckett. Pople like me have piles of these cards from obscure issues that they don't have any idea about the prices on. That's where the SCD price guide comes in handy. This thing is an absolute TOME of information. The book itself weighs in at a hefty 1,848 pages. On every page there is information about the sets that you probably couldn't find elsewhere. The amount of research the writers put into this guide is amazing. The biggest drawback about this guide is that it is only updated once a year. Most of these cards don't have a huge fluctuation in prices, like newer cards. If you are into new cards or aren't a true Baseball Fan or Collector, go buy Beckett and Tuff Stuff. They're good price guides. I use them for new things. They aren't in depth and don't explain variations very well. If you want to spend hours and hours learning about more card sets and collections that you have never heard of, just to get more information than this is the book for you! I highly recommend!

The guide has any card ever made and is pretty easy to find most of them. However it would have been a lot easier to find cards if the company had put an alphabetical index in the book at some point. Also for being the 2007 price guide it has very few sets from 2006 just early sets like Topps Opening Day and Upper Deck First Edition. Overall very handy to have when needing the values of baseball cards but not convenient if looking up newer sets.The guide has any card ever made and is pretty easy to find most of them. However it would have been a lot easier to find cards if the company had put an alphabetical index in the book at some point. Also for being the 2007 price guide it has very few sets from 2006 just early sets like Topps Opening Day and Upper Deck First Edition. Overall very handy to have when needing the values of baseball cards but not convenient if looking up newer sets.

Fast, User Friendly and reliable
This is one of the best books for baseball card prices. I would recommend this book to first stating a collection or if they have an outdated book of prices. The book is a bit bulky but with the information inside it is well worth carrying around.
