This book is a great guide, especially for people who are already fans of Cesar Millan and understand his approach to dog training. I got the book to use with our German shepherd puppy. It's best to read the book before acquiring a puppy because there are sections on choosing the right breed and energy level of dog and very early work from the moment the pup meets a new owner. While the book provides advice to first time puppy owners, it is useful even to a seasoned trainer. Cesar's techniques produce the fastest and best results of the many methods I've seen. As a vet tech I always recommend trying Cesar's approach to anyone with an unruly, unbalanced dog. Some people may wonder at or not understand Cesar's discussions of energy and how to silently communicate with dogs. My advice is: try it, what do you have to lose? Just staying in a calm state of mind with a difficult dog often helps dramatically. There are two reasons I give a rating of 4 out of 5 for this book. The biggest is Cesar's shameless promotion of his own brands. He pushes his dog food, treats, program and facilities. It would have seemed more professional to me if he had left that out. The other reason is that too much print is wasted on descriptions and chit chat about the four pups Cesar chose to raise before he wrote the book. It's easy to skip over the superfluous material but it would have been nice if Cesar had used that space to offer more advice on specific training issues. He covers the most common puppy behavior problems but that section could have been longer and more in depth. Overall Cesar's book is a useful tool and anyone should find it helpful.Read full review
This is an excellent book!! The examples of real life people and their experience is so helpful. Cesar is so good at using real situations. I had just brought home a new puppy and read the book as quickly as possible realizing I had already made mistakes. Because I used the techniques like crate training for housebreaking and other techniques given for making routines for my new puppy he has turned into a delightful new addition. Everyone he meets thinks he is just a wonderful dog. I credit the time invested and techniques used in training. It is an investment in time don't be mistaken. No book will automatically make the dog. You must use the information and make the time investment. You can't give up when there are set backs or it isn't as easy as you think. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone starting out with a new puppy.Read full review
I thought the book was well laid out and that many things were explained in detail. I particularly enjoyed the fact that Millan talked about all the different rituals he does with the puppies. Millan has always lacked the ability to actually explain what he does with the dogs (due to the fact that he changes his approach for each individual dog) so it was nice to see that there are things he does with dogs that everyone else can do. An easy read.
Loved the book. "The Dog Whisperer" really does have an amazing understanding of dogs. Although his specialty is in the larger more difficult to handle dogs such as Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, etc., I still found the information he offered invaluable to raise my tiny Yorkie puppy. I highly recommend this book as well as his others. When it comes to dogs, he is really incredibly insightful. Other training books seem to all be the same by comparison. If you don't know Cesar Millan, by all means watch his show if you can and definitely buy this book. His steps are simple to follow and they work!
I love the information offered in this book. It is an easy read. I breed dogs and I now give every buyer a copy. It covers just about every question new puppy owners might have and really makes a useful reference tool. Cesar is an amazing educator who truly helps humans as well as dogs live better lives.
