Synopsis
They were Amazon and Walmart combined--the one place to shop for Americans who needed everything--clothes, furniture, tools, jewelry, musical instruments, books, and more Imagine it's the end of the nineteenth century, and, with one catalog, you can buy everything from beds and tools to clothing and opium. (Yes, opium.) Not to mention ear trumpets, horse buggies, and Bibles. For every recognizable item included in the 1897 Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalogue , plenty of others are guaranteed to confuse or interest 21st century readers--like Bust Cream or Food and Sweet Spirits of Nitre. What was once standard household fare is today a sometimes strange, often funny look at what life was once like for the average American family. Sears, Roebuck & Co. has defined and innovated American retail for years. As the company grew from humble beginnings, its catalog selection exploded to include all sorts of categories and encompassed almost everything imaginable; eventually you could actually buy a house right along with everything you needed to furnish it. Flipping through the pages of seemingly endless items, huge and small, readers will find it impossible not to marvel at such early American ingenuity and determination to allow people in the farthest reaches of a still-growing nation to purchase and receive all the necessities of life and the comforts of home. For antique collectors, historians, costumers, set designers, and anyone just interested in the everyday components of life back in 1897, this facsimile is as entertaining as it is educational., They were Amazon and Walmart combined--the one place to shop for Americans who needed everything--clothes, furniture, tools, jewelry, musical instruments, books, and more! Excellent! Retrostar Music is a very fair seller - they gave me a 5% discount on top of an already great price! They also communicated the status of my order quite frequently. The CD I ordered came in a box with plenty of wrapping paper to ensure it would not get beaten up in shipping. Usually sellers just send CDs in envelopes, so I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived in a box. The CD itself is in perfect condition. A+ experience! I would highly recommend this seller!

"Moneyball" is an old/new movie/DVD that I haven't seen. "Retrostar Music" as seller had some of Mr. Pitts movies & this was labelled "New", I decided to purchase it. The seller sent all I ordered with FREE shipping &discounted the price of all as well. It took less than a week - six days - for my complete order to arrive & they were all carefully packaged & arrived in two boxes. If I ever have a question regarding what else is in the seller's inventory, I always receive a very prompt reply.

  • Sears & the USA in the old days!

So interesting to see what value money had back in 1897. I’m a 1938 model, & I can relate somewhat to the prices. Also fascinating to me is seeing all the devices used for growing & preparing food. It is a book that I can keep on my desk & read a few pages per day & enjoy every minute of it.

  • 19th Century America in illustrations.

This is a great reprint. Very well done. Great for antiques. I dated a dining room chair I have as well as an oil storm lamp. This was how my grandparents lived.

It is a reprint of the original 1897 catalog. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I think it is
