Lovin' Spoonful...
Allow me to go out on a limb to defend this much maligned Ministry record. If you discovered Ministry with Psalm 69, Lolapalooza, or their last 3 "Bush" records - you probably won't find much to love here -there are lots of other records to satiate your love of speed metal. For me, Ministry is at their best when they try new things. Twitch, The Land of Rape and Honey and The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste all broke new ground and set the template for heavy, creative, sound collage, and industrial music to come. The Dark Side of the Spoon (as well as Filth Pig) move away from the speed metal/sample heavy/programmed sound of Psalm 69 to a slower, live band feel. The production is very dense with a lot going on in the mix. Songs like Step, Eureka Pile and Nursing Home are clever and ... Allow me to go out on a limb to defend this much maligned Ministry record. If you discovered Ministry with Psalm 69, Lolapalooza, or their last 3 "Bush" records - you probably won't find much to love here -there are lots of other records to satiate your love of speed metal. Supermanic Soul is as aggressive as anything they've ever released. Some songs are actually built around a vocal MELODY?!? Long instrumental passages reveal multiple layers and even approach progressive / jazz music. Sure, the guys made some bad choices weren't in the best of health during this period. That's probably why it took 4 years to make this record! Not every song is a winner, but Ministry is at their best when they experiment so I'll happily take the good with the bad. Paul Barker left after Animositisomina and Al proceeded to release 3 albums that are virtually the same record - good, but not much more than speed metal. I'll take The Dark Side of the Spoon or Filth Pig instead any day. Oh ... and the album art is pretty funny too.

Whip And Chain
Certainly not Ministry's best album but it is powerful and enjoyable so I have no complaints. Ministry has explored (and helped invent) many different aspects of industrial. This one leans in the direction of metal. 4 Stars.
