Notes
Out of print in the U.S.! 1992 collection from the Scottish New Wave veterans. Picking up where the band's previous hits compilation, 1982's Themes for Great Cities left off, Glittering Prize compacts five albums into 16 tracks. Because they were bigger critical and commercial successes, 1982's New Gold Dream, 1984's Sparkle in the Rain and 1985's Once Upon a Time are better represented than 1989's Street Fighting Years and 1991's Real Life. The mid-'80s tracks, particularly 'Don't You (Forget About Me)', 'Up on the Catwalk', "Promised You a Miracle' and 'Someone Somewhere in Summertime' remain classics to this day. EMI.

  • Simple Minds - "Glittering Prize" (UK Edition)

A decent, but not great, compilation of Simple Minds work on the Virgin label between 1981-1992. The vast difference in song list between the U.S. and British versions of this album was meant to make it more alluring to those respective markets. Now, each version just feels incomplete without the missing songs from the other (although the British version is superior to the U.S. edition). No matter. Both were rendered useless when the 2 disc "The Best of Simple Minds" was released in 2001. The newer set is not only more expansive, but features a song list that makes more sense. If one is only looking for the most well-known of Simple Minds' hits ("Don't You (Forget About Me), "Alive and Kicking,") then pick up a copy of "Glittering Prize" on the cheap. If you want to dig a little deeper ...

  • Simple Minds

A representative sampling of this group, though light on their earlier, better albums like New Gold Dream. "Mandela Day" sounds unfortunately dated, and that song from the Breakfast Club could have been left off (though it's their biggest hit). Overall, not bad.
