Finally, a Philips recorder that records good audio, with great features!
I've been professionally involved with audio for over 50 years. Lately I've become intrigued by all the handheld recorders on the market, mainly for portable recording. I own several made by Sony, Tascam, Marantz, Olympus, Alesis, Archos, Sandisk, iRiver, and more. I've been curious about the Philips products, which have become heavily discounted lately, and I've bought seven different models. Every model has its pros and cons. For example, the 2510 has a good display and metering, and it can even record 16-bit PCM (CD format), but its stereo separation is nonexistent (terrible mic placement) and there's no external mic input. The 3100 and 3200 do have external inputs, but the display is really disappointing. I'm impressed by the Philips DVT4010. The display and metering are good. ... The 3100 and 3200 do have external inputs, but the display is really disappointing. I'm impressed by the Philips DVT4010. The display and metering are good. It can record PCM (as well as several different MP3 bitrates). The mics are well located and the stereo separation is reasonable (given that the mics are only 1.5" apart). There's an external input for mic or line. There are several recording level presets, or level can be adjusted manually. That's very important for getting recordings with no distortion and the least amount of noise! It has 8GB internal memory, which is 12 hours at PCM quality, more time at the MP3 settings, and it can also use microSD cards. Finally, there are added features, like pre-recording, timer recording, and more. What's not to like? I'm a bit annoyed by the button layout: when holding the recorder in your hand, it's easy to accidentally push some of the buttons located on the edges. And like virtually every handheld recorder I've tried, the internal speaker sounds tinny and weak ... that's unavoidable with a speaker this small (although the headphone/line output sounds good). The biggest drawback IMHO is that it uses an internal battery which is not user-replaceable. That's inconvenient if you're using the recorder on a long trip, vacation, etc. When the battery power runs out, you can't just pop in new AAA cells; you're out of luck until you have a chance to plug in an external power source to recharge the internal battery. And in a few years when the battery reaches the end of its useful lifetime, the machine essentially will be useless and disposable. Normally an internal battery like this would be a deal-breaker for me. But I found the 4010 on sale for much less than the original "new" price, so I was curious and I bought one. Aside from the battery issue, I like it a lot. I see the DVT4010 advertised from $80 to well over $100. Personally, I'd never pay that much. (IMHO all the Philips models I could find are initially priced too high.) But I found a DVT4010 online, discounted to around $20. At that price it's well worth buying. If you're interested in portable recorders, for business, vacation, or inconspicuous recording, try the DVT4010. You'll be glad you did.
