The title sounds like soft porn but it is anything but. This film tracks the sexual exploits of two college roommates from youth to mid-life. Art Garfunkel plays the sensitive, take-it-slow-can't-easily-get-a-girl type and Jack Nicholson plays the knows-what-he-wants-and-gets-it-quick type. Two halves of a whole. After many years of self-destructive indulgence, Nicholson finally poisons his friendship with Garfunkel, who has been living vicariously through Nicholson's exploits. In the end, Nicholson is abandonned and alone and must pay for companionship. I like this film because it is an example of the early work of some of my favorite actors. Jack Nicholson is classic as the smart hustler. Candice Bergen is cast as the stereo-typical ice-princess-waiting-to-be-thawed. Don't write her off, though, she's pivotal to the outcome. Ann-Margret is busty and lusty. And--ART GARFUNKEL IS CUTE AS ALL! The message was strong for its time (early 70's) but might seem trite to today's jaded audience. I think this film has an appeal for both men and women, despite the fact that the men I watched it with became "bored". They said it was a chick flick. Maybe they weren't in the mood for a morality lesson? Did it hit too close to home? Is the action too cerebrial? They didn't think Art Garfunkel was cute at all. It is clearly a warning for those who are young and also for those who are past their prime. Buying into the sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll lifestyle doesn't pay off for these closet 70's hedonists. If they can't reconcile society's demands and responsibilities with gradification of desire, how can the average person hope to do it? Judging by what's happening in society these days, I'd say the filmmaker is right. Draw your own conclusions.Read full review
This is a great awesome classic movie with famous actors like Jack Nicholson, Ann Margret, Art Garfunkel, & Candice Bergen. One of the most controversial movies of its time. This is a "thought provoking" comedy-drama funny, poignant look at relationshipsas seen through the eyes of two friends over a 20 year period. superbly crafted by playwright Jules Feiffer. Carnal Knowledge is brimming with touching insights, sexy banter & powerful performances by 3-time Oscar winners Jack Nicholson, Ann Margret, Art Garfunkel, & Candice Bergen.
Filming is too dark for viewing. 90% of scenes filmed in low light unable to recognize.

i just saw this for the first time in it's entirety watching this dvd and while it's dated, it's an interesting look at the attitudes & morals of various characters starting in the late 50's and thru the 70's. jack nicholson is, of course, jack. candace bergen is so different from her murphy brown persona we all know & love. art garfunkel is actually pretty good in this. ann-margret surprised & impressed me with her performance. this is worth seeing.
Classic movie for my collection! Love it!

Carnal Kmowledge raised a lot of eyebrows when it was released in 1971 for it's statements about sex and the way two male college students (Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel) relate to the women in their lives. Candice Bergen, Ann-Margret, Carol Kane and Rita Moreno also appear in this Mike Nichols film. Rated R for language and sexual situations.
One of the worst movies we've seen. Patronizing depiction of females. We love Jack Nicholson, but he portrays an extremely male chauvanistic, arrogant and hateful male-in-heat on the prowl in this early film of his career. Certainly shows how far the film industry has evolved on the years. The filmography wasn't that great either.
awsome

I nice addition to my collection.I use to own it on a vhs tape, but I borrowed it out to a friend and it was never returned. Finding it on dvd makes up for the lost vhs tape. A great cast and one of Jack Nicholsons better movies.
