Synopsis
"A modern classic of courage and excitement." -- The New Yorker Soon to be a Major Motion Picture Starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek Henri Charrière, nicknamed "Papillon," for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, was convicted in Paris in 1931 of a murder he did not commit. Sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, he became obsessed with one goal: escape . After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, he was eventually sent to the notorious prison, Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped . . . until Papillon. His flight to freedom remains one of the most incredible feats of human cunning, will, and endurance ever undertaken. Charrière's astonishing autobiography, Papillon , was first published in France to instant acclaim in 1968, more than twenty years after his final escape. Since then, it has become a treasured classic--the gripping, shocking, ultimately uplifting odyssey of an innocent man who would not be defeated. • Redemption is a Road to Travel

As usual the book was a more complete and entertaining story than the excellent movie staring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. The true story covered many more escapes and adventures from the planning and building of many boats and navigation intricacies to the people he met and their cultures and stories. The island tribe where he lived for 6 months that was covered in fifteen minutes in the movie to the deep appreciation of God as interpreted by Henri Charriere....His observations about people who helped him and those who punished him. The laws of captivity and the interactions of his fellow captives in prison. If you enjoyed the movie (which I did) this book will open a fuller deeper world to you of the trials and tribulations Papillon experienced to be free. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share ...

  • Amazing book that deserves a second, third reading

Papillon is all kind of things: adventure, survival, historical, autobiographical, geographical, political, and a love story as well. It’s one of the most remarkable things I’ve read and one of those rare books that takes you in at the beginning and never lets you down. Plenty of people would call this a must-read but I think it’s one of those you read and read again.

  • Papillon by Henri Charriere

Papillon, is the true-life adventure story of Henri Charriere. He was given a life sentence in 1931 for a murder he didn’t commit. In 1933, he was transferred to the penal colony in French Guiana. Here is the story of: his nine escape attempts (and sometimes brutal re-captures), a detailed look at life inside the penal colony, his confinement in solitary, his transfer to Devil’s Island and eventual escape, and finally his freedom. You’ll meet many colorful characters and see how people cope with these extreme situations. The movie that was based on this book does show some of what’s in this book, but the movie changed quite a bit of the real story. I found it entertaining, educational, colorful, but sad to see so much of his life wasted in confinement. Papillon finds his freedom at the end ...

  • You must read this book.

It was a don't put down book. You must read it! I am a former Corrections Officer and I loved the book and was glued to it. My Library had the movie and I got it and devoured it. The book was better though.
