Navman iCN 510 Sat Nav Device
As a first time user of sat nav, I wanted a device that I could use straight out of the box and also needed one to work in the USA and the iCN510 seemed to meet my requirements. Initially, the device took a while to find a satellite, but once it did there were no further problems. It is quick and accurate and keeps up with the car traveling at speed on the motorway. The windscreen mounting bracket supplied is effective and holds the device in a very stable position. The screen is bright and the mapping very clear. The menu system is easy to use and intuitive and the device itself is small enough to put in your pocket. There are no further software upgrades available for this device and I also purchased the USA mapping software from another company that uses a bespoke version of the tom tom ... This combination works very well. You can buy latest maps of the UK, Europe and the USA either from Navman directly or using an on line e-tailer. I would definitely recommend this device to anyone who wants a simple, reliable sat nav system and has had no previous experience of using one. The device I bought was supplied with the following: 1. iCN 510 2. Windscreen mounting bracket 3. USB cable for connection to PC 4. Navman software CD (not Vista compatible) 5. European maps on 3 CD's 6. SD card with UK maps 7. In car charger 8. Protective wallet 9. Operating manuals It is possible to add the latest speed camera locations to the device by accessing on line services where you can import a data file into the unit by using the supplied software. I found the software to be a little limiting and it does not work with Vista, so using it may be a problem for some who do not have access to a windows XP machine. The software does not run in compatibility mode in Vista very well. Overall, this is an easy to use, works straight out of the box unit and I have no problems recommending it. I would however, allow for the fact that you will need to buy the latest version of the UK maps from Navman, particularly if you travel extensively throughout the UK. Overall, I would give the device 8/10 for ease of use, value for money and the fact that software upgrades are available from on-line e-tailers to keep the unit future proof.

This was a very expensive item when it was launched in the early to mid 2000s (£299). I know because I bought one new in 2005. I still use it and bought another via eBay for a second car. The original Navman map software was really very bad with totally illogical map routing. For example, it always tried to make me enter a certain motorway via a private, emergency services only access road, and routed me through quiet little villages when there were by-passes that could have been used instead. It also had a tendency to send me via the narrowest, longest country lane route possible, even when settings were set to "motorway" and to tell me to turn into roads that did not exist, farm tracks, private roads and "no entry" and one way streets! It once sent me onto a private, single track, gated ... This was a very expensive item when it was launched in the early to mid 2000s (£299). I know because I bought one new in 2005. It once sent me onto a private, single track, gated road that served a fishing lake as a legitimate route between two main roads! Not very good! Sadly(?), Navman then decided not to release any further upgrades to their own software for this model, so you were stuck with its shortcomings, although a set of maps for Europe was made available! The plus points are that it is a reliable, robust unit, with a clear, fair sized screen, which picks up fairly quickly, although an external aerial (sold on eBay) makes it work much better. It can take a lot of wear and tear and will still work well, provided the screen is not damaged. Some units were upgraded by the owners with new software, such as Miomap, which was sold on eBay. The new software really makes all the difference and means the unit can still be used today. If you use the original installed map software, it will be next to useless, except in areas that have not had any change for ten years as it was inaccurate, flawed and outdated even when it was released! Some units may need a new battery as the original rechargeable may have "died" by now, and these are quite expensive (see eBay), but the car charger will make the unit usable if present. All in all a good buy if you can pick an updated one up for under £30 or spend the extra to upgrade the software. Check that you can still get the Miomap etc. software to upgrade it on the net first, though.

NAVMAN ICN520
I bought a Navman icn 520 recently from ebay. This is the first sat nav i have ever owned so i cannot comment on how it compares with other sat navs. I found this sat nav VERY easy to use. it was easy to work out what to do (even without looking at the manual) it has got a decent sized colour screen and is very clear. It is also able to adapt if you take a wrong turning and re routes itself. The voice commands are nice and clear and easy to understand. I also bought an external ariel to boost the GPS signal and it works great. I would recommend allowing it to search for available satellites while the car is stationary as it is able to find them much quicker than if the car is moving. For anybody looking for a good value, easy to use sat nav then i would definitely recommend this ... I bought a Navman icn 520 recently from ebay.
