This takes me BACK--to the late 60's, when My dad had just joined the Columbia Record and Tape club. He'd received his free albums in the mail--and he wasn't sure what Steppenwolf WAS. But it definitely didn't FIT IN with the country and crooner albums he had ordered--so he gave me Steppenwolf-LIVE and the Association IN CONCERT albums. When I got to the PUSHER track on the album--I wore it out listening to the irreverent lyrics. I became HOOKED on the acid rock music--although I wasn't old enough to understand all of the PROTEST song-type lyrics. I later bought the 8-track version for my car--and kept groovin' to songs like Don't Step On The Grass, Sam; Monster/America; and my favorites From Here To There, Eventually and Born To Be Wild. So I'm now using the CD recording to enjoy and re-capture my youth!! It's a crisp live recording--which I remember WELL. In the 1980's I got to see John Kay and Steppenwolf at a small venue in Monterey, CA. They sounded as good that night as the 69' conceet. Steppenwolf was far ahead of their time!!!Read full review
Hey Rockers, This was a must have for me.. I learned to play guitar listening to this album over and over and over. Great tunes and great vibe !! Classic line up of Band members ... What a joy to have it on CD .. hard to imagine it's been all these years since I owned the original double album vinyl .. played it until the scratchy sound was too much !! If you are a Steppenwolf fan , you should own this one as well as a number of the others ... Yes, this Band had way more songs than just .. "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride" .. check it out for yourself !! Buy it !! Buy It !! Buy It !!! You won't be sorry. Rodger D. / Colo.Springs
One of the first few records I bought when I was young ( yes, you youngsters we really had vinyl disks back in the stone age ) was the double LP of Steppenwolf live. And as all who have had record albums at one time know they do not age well. And I never found a another print of the album. I bought this CD in a heart beat when I saw someone had a copy of it. It has the energy and musicians ship of a GREAT band in their prime. I love it because the music stands the test of time and it brings back so many memories of my youth. Of carefree times when I was still in school. To hear it recorded in analog with crisp clear tube sound and reproduced in digital is the best of both worlds. I like it because in CD format it could last me forever. No more scratch or hiss coming out of my speakers. And the original art work is a big bonus. What I hate is I did not find it sooner! E-BAY is the best! Anything that you may have very found memories of, there is someone out there who feels the same and you may find that special something to bring you that happiness you so fondly remember, I know I have! Just think of something you like, love, miss and just hit SEARCH.Read full review
This is not perfect, but no live recording ever is. This captured the album as it was first introduced, a few flaws here and there, but very accurately reproduced. If you want a polished performance, this is not for you. However, if you want driving raw John Kay at his finest, give it a listen. When I spun this disk, I could recall the first time I heard it more than 40 years ago and had the same reactions. If you are into metal this is where it started, and this still has the edge.
This was a great album back in the day. Listening to this CD takes me back to my teenage years and rocking out in my room. Love it.
