In this earlier work by Edward Sorel with texts by his wife, Nancy Caldwell, there is no doubt that the same incisive mind, in this case as a husband-and-wife team, was at work then delivering the sort of caustic barbs we have come to expect from Edward alone today. Deeply thoughtful as well as raucously funny, each "encounter" prompts one to pause and think a moment to reexamine these famous figures from the history of the arts, politics, and science in light of what we may think we knew about them while appreciating the absurdity-cum-humor of the superb drawings. These are very complex little statements, each a delight involving some thought, and I can thoroughly recommend it to fans of the artist's work who may wish to see yet another side of his creative output.
