  • Lots of reading/story for anyone who loves animals

I bought this out of curiosity - never heard of the book or author, I later discovered she'd written a lot of books and is also an illustrator, she has a website. I thought it would be a slender book but it's a proper sized "novel" all about various animals adventures on a boat and in a boatyard. It is a lovely properly written story that keeps you wondering what will happen next. It has some serious issues too, such as bullying and the death of one of the animals. In that respect it is a mature book, dealing with things that can happen but in a gentle way. It is a heart warming book and I learnt a lot about boats and boatyards! Later I discovered the author has lived on boats, always had animals, and that Doris was a real cat. Her website shows a pic of Doris, just like the Doris in the pictures. As an adult - and a woman - I was glad to see that contrary to the usual stereotypes, the captain of the ship was a woman, and the vet who visits is also a "she". Little things that I think are important in telling children women can be these things as well. I loved the story and can see it being read again and again by children and adults alike - it's certainly not boring with plenty of plot and little illustrations throughout. Highly recommended.
