The 1981 punk rock documentary THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION by Penelope Spheeris was the first exposition of the burgeoning punk and hardcore subculture in Los Angeles to the masses of America. The emotional and raw performances by the likes of Black Flag, Germs, and Fear caught on film by Spheeris painted a youth in revolt, flying in the face of conventional culture. Collected in this special set are Spheeris' groundbreaking "Decline" documentaries; the original from 1981 and her two follow-ups from 1988 and 1998.

Trilogy of Decline
Disc 1: A pure look into lives of the band members and original punk rock kids of the early 1980s. About 5 bands appear on this. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear, etc, etc. Great disc, a classic. Disc 2: Unfortunately, the majority of this installment features a bunch of glam-rock, 'hair metal' bands that are honestly terrible. Bright spots in this disc include Megadeth, and Dave Mustaine's commentary. Lemmy, Paul Stanley, and Chris Holmes hanging out in a pool with his elderly mother nearby Disc 3: This movie was a fitting end to this trilogy, and made up for the very un-satisfying second movie. It features some teenage punks. Living poor, squatting, and pretty much refusing to get jobs. Groups include Final Conflict and a few no-name bands. Nothing could ever live up to the first Decline, but the third one is very good in my opinion.

Great price. The 1st punk Decline film is classic and essential viewing for all new young punkers. The other two films are not so good. But the set is nicely packaged and for a great value. Has a cool booklet inside. Good buy for sure.
