The first edition of this title, published in 1982, sold over 13,000 copies worldwide. The second edition takes account of the progress made since then in refining standard methods and applying new ones. One of the major new techniques now covered is pulsed field electrophoresis of DNA. Another key area described in detail is the use of electrophoretic techniques to study the specific interaction of proteins with DNA sequences by foot-printing and gel retardation analysis. These techniques have proved invaluable in pinpointing the exact nature of the interaction of proteins with regulatory DNA sequences. In addition the book now also describes the use of electrophoresis for the purification of synthetic oligonucleotides which are proving to be an essential tool in the areas of molecular biology in general and genetic engineering in particular. In addition the interior of the book has been redesigned to allow greater accessibility to the protocols.
