Although I'm hardly an expert on the genre, AKIRA is the Marmite of Anime. It is either viewed as a gratuitous bloodbath or a masterpiece. For me, elements of both are true. Akira is fundamentally a hard-nosed political societal critique, exploring a number of psychological and philosophical themes, such as social unrest and revolution, the nature of corruption, the will to power, psychic awareness and the growth from childhood to maturity both in individuals and the human race itself. For some, maybe there is a lot of gratuitous violence and blood, this film is definitely not for the faint hearted! The difference between this film and most other gratuitious bloodbaths is the side serving of morality that sits up and slaps you round the face, as well. Artistically, the animation and sound in Akira is unparalleled. The details of the city environments, the use of shadows and artificial lighting in combination with the uniquely experimental soundtrack add to the twisted mood of the movie. It is the attention to detail that makes the animation and sounds come alive. but "Akira" does have its flaws. At two hours long, it is lengthy for an anime film. The film is condensed down from the six telephone book sized volumes of the original manga. Because of this the plot becomes complicated with multiple threads, many characters and no solid explanation for what Tetsuo is experiencing. Furthermore the voice acting of the film is somewhat clumsy and sometimes down right bizarre. All in all, Akira is not a movie for everyone and be prepared to watch it more than once in order for the movie to make any sense.. To fully appreciate this film you need an open mind, so clear your head and ignore the hype on BOTH sides and judge for yourself. One thing you can be sure of, Akira will make a powerful and lasting impression on you.Read full review
The discs were in perfect condition but the box had taken some damage. I am fond of things that have battle scars and seen some use but others may not be on the same page. Regardless the Dvd is a classic and I happy to have it in my collection.
I bought this as part of my dissertation research. I am not a particular fan of graphic novels so I found the storyline a bit slow, but the attention to detail was amazing, and the soundtrack was well worth attention, with interesting fusions between modern and traditional world musics and fresh use of music technology, underscoring the technology - obsessed world of the film very effectively. The length is a little over the top I think, but if you're a fan of the book version I got the feeling it left out more than stayed in. However, if you're not a fan of cartoons or world music fusion, I wouldn't recommend this film...it gets quite tedious and depressing towards the end. Having said that, there are great moments, and at some points I found myself entering entirely into the setting of futuristic Tokyo. The storyline sat really well in the format.Read full review
