My wife and I needed a decent camera for summer vacations as well as having on hand for general purpose photos. The images we have printed look great! Auto mode works very well for most situations but the camera has much more functionality...you just have to learn all the features. We have not learned all the modes/options this camera has to offered but am confident photos will come out that much better! Great size point and shoot. Not too fond of the touch screen yet, takes time to get used to. I found this camera as a demo sale and got it for a great price. After using it though, retail price is still justifiable. Overall, for a point and shoot this camera is great. We were on the fence of investing (read: dumping money) into a DSLR but decided this fit the bill.
Excellent camera. This is my second PowerShot, I replace my SD300 with this camera. I was so pleased with the SD300 over the last several years that I wanted to stay with this line. The features on the 500 HS are great, picture quality for the most part is excellent. I've shot almost 2000 photos so far, some of the photos were taken from moving vehicles and had a difficult time focusing. In general random photos are out of focus, but this is my only complaint about the camera. Compared to the much older SD300 the low light capabilities of this camera are amazing! Other than haveing to drop the MP down to 3.0 inorder to do high frame rate shots my camera far out performs the frames per second advertised. The camera is a power hog, so instead of carring one spare battery I carry two spare batteries, they are cheap on ebay. I am still skeptical about the longjevity of the touch screen but they work in other devises and the screen is very bright even in sun light. This is probably why it is a power hog. Again other than a certain percentage of photos being out of focus this camera so far is excellent. For the price it can't be beat.Read full review
While the point and shoot cameras I really wanted were the new Sony DSC-RX100 first and then the Canon PowerShot S100 12.1 MP second for their larger sensors, but they are also both much higher priced ($625 & $325). This little ELPH 500HS at less than $150 is both a tremendous bargain and great little camera. It takes great pictures if you avoid it's limitations (smallish sensor with corresponding noise at higher ISO). It has a fast f2 lens and Canon HS processing allows you to take pictures at lower shutter speed (ISO) when it would be too dark for other cameras. It also takes great full 1080p High Def video. Older model but much better than their newer 16.1MP replacements.
the model looks & feels slippery (almost without a firm hand grip) due to its soap-like thinness. The touch screen is usable but needs some get-used-to at first acquaintance; even though for basic setting and scrolling photos, it is kind of neat. the oblong LCD is very good. the flash is as expected for ELPH models yet the photos come out (from automatic mode) quite good (OFTEN very good) for indoors, and outdoors results come out with near-G12 type of clarity. Shooting including focusing time is quite satisfactory in terms of time b/w shots. The protuding zoom is disappointingly showing black metal, which makes it not so classy against a very pretty silvery front (for silver model) Overall, the "other" features are not worth discussing since this is a ELPH, where even the video capability is not my district to investigate. I would give it a 4.5 stars if it wasn't for the awkward lack of grip and the protuding black zoom. performance/speed is almost (mostly outdoors) as stellar as the likes of S95 and G11 (yet less expensive)Read full review

Canon's PowerShot ELPH 500HS is a fast, powerful compact digicam featuring their new HS system, a fast 12.1-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor, 4.4x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization and full 1080p HD video recording capabilities. While anyone can shoot with this camera thanks to the Smart Auto mode, there are also Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes for more advanced users. It excels in both performance and image quality, with its only drawback being a hard to use touch screen. With a MSRP of US $299.99, this is an excellent option in this price range.
