excellent film, loved the characters and bought the other two in the series which I also love.
highly recommend this film for pure entertainment value, characters are perfect, could be watched by any age audience. Great new set of actors playing what were iconic roles from way back. 2 hours of sheer fun and entertainment. Zachary Quinto is fantastic as Spock, Karl Urban plays a brilliant Bones and Chris Pine as Kirk, all fun and games. Hurry up number 4 film in the series is all I can say.highly recommend this film for pure entertainment value, characters are perfect, could be watched by any age audience. A worthy revamp of the classic series (spoilers alert)
As an avid Trekkie I was both looking forward to and dreading the release of this film. I grew up watching my Dad's videos of the original films and always favoured the original series over any of the newer series. I have to admit, I was not disappointed. The characters are true to the originals but keep modern and edgy, the story is both a big dumb action movie and a classic Star Trek plot and (on the whole) the writing and atmosphere are brilliant. Added onto all the new flashiness and all the bits and bobs added to appeal to a new audience are many, many throwbacks and references to the old school version, some that only the most obsessive viewer would get, from finally explaining Bone's nickname to the apple Kirk eats while doing the Kobayashi Maru (mirroring his actions when ... Overall, I came out the cinema a happy bunny. HOWEVER...There are some major flaws! The biggest, and the one that continues to grate on me everytime I watch it, has to be the love story between Spock and Uhura. While I can see why it was done (the original idea for the ground breaking kiss between Uhura and Kirk was that it would be Uhura and Spock but as usual William SHatner didn't want anyone else to get the limelight) it simply would not happen at that stage in Spock's development. During the five year mission (which the movie is set just before)Spock showed very little of his human side and it wasn't until Wrath of Khan (and after his death, Final Frontier) that this side came out - so how exactly would his logical brain fall in love? His life was barely altered by the time line change! And speaking of time lines, how old is he meant to be? They present him as being not much older then Kirk when he's meant to be 'just the right side of triple figures'. AND, the technology - it is way more advanced than the technology in the original series. I can accept the ship looking different, sounding different, I mean it's nearly 50 years later and special effects are brilliant, but the USS Kelvin has technology more advanced than the USS Voyager did that was before the altered time lines so where the hell did that come from? But, if you put aside those niggles and try to watch without your Trekkie cap on the film is brilliant, and even with them it's great so it's definitely worth a buy. I also recommend trying to find a copy of the graphic novel/comic series that acted as a prequel to it as it explains some of the little things in the movie that don't quite make sense (like why are the Romulans tattooed?) so it's worth a read even after you've watched the film.

Want to introduce Star Trek to your kids? This is a good starting point!
When i was a kid space and Star Trek always triggered my imagination and I was just curious if it would do the same for my boys 10 & 7 years old? I ended up buying a whole season of Next Generation and we have equally fun watching and discussing each episode. But the Trekie era started out with this movie. It has been worth every dime spent.

Like new and great value
I bought this DVD to replace one I had given my brother to watch(we live 80 miles apart and I thought it would be cheaper to post it than deliver 'by hand'!) I like this film because it is an exciting and well made 'update' on the Star Trek movies/series. If you're a Star Trek fan I think it's a good prequel to the 'original' William Shatner version. If you're not a fan it's still an exciting action movie with 'edge of your seat' stuff and some good humour especially from 'Scotty' played by Simon Pegg. A great film.
As an avid fan of the Star Trek original series, I was sceptical in buying this 2009 film. It was really great and especially that Leonard Nimoy featured. The story and effects were brilliant. Anyone who is a Star Trek fan would appreciate this film.
