Great Film, Lousy DVD
There have been three filmed versions of the book, which is a masterpiece in it's own right. Of the three movies, this 1980's version sticks closest to the source material, and it is a very good movie. However the dvd release is really frustrating. First off, the picture is the horrible cropped, 4x3 format, which makes a movie that was probably well photographed, look small scale and cheap. Even more infuriating is that it looks to be HEAVILY censored; any violence done to bulls is completely and very sloppily chopped out, which robs the movie of most of it's power. I don't understand why they did this, as "Moment of Truth," another film about bullfighting, shows such graphic, real footage of bulls betting mangled with nothing cut out.
